Interview with Ty Patterson

Today I am joined by Ty Patterson who is the author of The Warrior.

I asked Ty to tell me a little bit about himself and here is what he had to say:

Ty has been selling all his life. He has sold tea, exotic leather goods, industrial equipment, and now he creates characters and stories that will hopefully live long in the imagination of his readers.

Having lived on a couple of continents, he has realized that people are fundamentally the same everywhere and that once people are able to overcome the postcode lottery of being born to a particular set of parents and in a certain geography, then what one makes of life is down to oneself.

When Ty is not writing the Zeb and Broker series of books, he likes to think he is saving the world. So far he hasn't brought out the red underpants, but you  never know.

So the time has come to see how the interview went

Interview questions

Hi Ty, thank you for accepting to be interviewed. As my blog says ‘ Complete randomness from a crazy author’ so expect the unexpected J

How long have you wanted to be a writer?

A very good question. I have written for a very long time; written short stories, marketing warfare stories, advertising copy…many things, but the desire to be a full length novel writer got into me only in 2011. Now it is taking over my life.

Yes writing has a way of doing that J
Have you come up against any hurdles along the way?

Making time and energy for writing, away from my day job are the primary challenges. Of that finding energy to write is the bigger challenge since I work in a very demanding job that requires travel.

Marketing is so hard, especially when you don’t have a publisher to do it for you. That’s why indie authors need to stick together and help each other out J
What would you say is the most difficult thing about being a writer is?

Being heard!  There are gazillion writers out there, and getting your voice heard, the book read, reviewed and purchased is like rolling a stone uphill. It can be done, but requires very hard work.

What or who inspires you to write?
In Dec 2011, my wife challenged me to come out of my comfort zone and write a novel and my son has been a constant inspiration. The Warrior is dedicated to the two of them.

I bet your readers are glad that your wife challenged you. If your books are a series, how many books do you plan to have in your series?

I started writing The Warrior initially as a stand-alone book and then mid-way, I realised how much I liked the continuity and character development in a series. Keeping that in mind, I changed certain characters and completed the book.
I am currently working on the second book in the series and can see another 3 books at least, so 5 books for sure in the series.

Do you have any other writing projects on the go, apart from your current series?

No. I have a lot of admiration for authors who can write multiple and diverse projects at the same time. I unfortunately am not one of them. I can write only one book at a time.

If you could be any of your characters who would it be and why?

That is a tough one.
I am sure most writers build some of their characters based on some personal aspirational values and I am no different. The two central characters in The Warrior, Zeb Carter and Broker, have characteristics that I want; of the two, I have a soft spot for Broker. He is urbane, witty, massively intelligent, two of three that I am not J

What genre would you say your books are in?
Thriller is the primary genre and they can also be categorized as action, crime, suspense, and military fiction.

Do you have any favourite authors?

Loads. In the thriller genre, Robert Crais, Stephen Hunter, Lee Child, Greg Rucka, David Baldacci, Harlan Coben, Barry Eisler, James Lee Burke, Sean Black and many more.
I read anything including the labels on toilet paper, and am currently re-reading Steven Levitt’s Freakonomics, a book that I love.

As a Brit we have one burning question going around our country…………… Do you scrunch or fold? ;) (toilet paper)
Fold. Scrunching is so yuck.

What do you like to do besides writing?

In the land where mortgages have to be paid, I work 12- 14 hours a day in a job that I love. Hopefully my writing will start rewarding me one day so that I can write full time (readers this is your cue to go buy my book in gazillion numbers).
I am into sports of all kind, love politics, debating, and avidly follow developments in macroeconomics and quantum physics.

What is your favourite cheese?

I hate cheese.  I enjoy good food, but I am an ‘eat to live’ guy.

Sweet or savoury?

Sweet. Pies, Tarts, Puddings… you name them, I will consume them.

Would you rather be attacked by one horse sized duck or 20 duck sized horses?

One horse sized duck. I have some chance of escaping it, but 20 horses? No way!

If you had one wish that I could wave a magic wand and grant you, what would it be and why?
That is easy. Make The Warrior a best seller the world overJ.

Thank you so much for taking part in my blog today. I hope you had fun :)
